Planning your Labor Day weekend festivities yet? One of the best things happening in Portland is this year's edition of Art in the Pearl. This fine show of juried art and craft is making its 20th anniversary appearance this year in the north Park Blocks downtown. I will be showing my glass work this year and would love to meet you, so stop by and say hello. I will write again with more details concerning my location as things develop. Stay tuned!
Sometimes it means commissioning a work that is the right size and image for a certain place. this is how a commission works with me.

The process begins with a discussion of the subject matter, colors and location of the work. I want you to have the work that will please you, so I make sure to listen and make note of all your thoughts. After this, a budget for the project is created. Know that preliminary discussions include talk about what price will work for you, and what scale of work will be possible within your budget. When a price has been agreed upon, I will ask for 1/3 of the commissioned price to begin work. This initial payment will cover my time for preliminary drawings and the first materials to begin work on the actual art work. When the project is at the half way point, I will submit images to you, and receive the next 1/3 payment.
When the work is completed and installed, I will receive the final 1/3, and you will have a new art work to enjoy for years to come.
New glass works will be making their way to San Francisco next month. This work, "Fall Begins," 8x10 inches, will be one of the pieces I will be showing at the juried American Craft Council Show, Aug. 8-10 at the Fort Mason Center. Look for me in booth 402. Show hours are Friday 10-8, Saturday 10-6, and Sunday 11-5. If you are in the area, I hope you will stop by. If you have friends in the Bay area who might be interested in the show, please feel free to share this information. It's a wonderful show with fine crafts from across the country. It's going to be here before we know it! The show opens Saturday, December 14 at 2:00, on the third floor of Pioneer Place in downtown Portland, and each work sells for $40! A steal! Proceeds support local artists, The Peoples Art of Portland Gallery, and The Oregon Food Bank. The annual show has grown to nearly 666 artist this year. Maybe it should be the big 700? Each artist does up to 10 works and the variety is staggering. Something for everyone. Come on out and support this worthy event. Art goes quickly, so hurry in for best selection!
I am happy to inform you that I will be participating in the American Craft Council Show in San Francisco August 2-4. This juried event of fine crafts will feature excellent artists in the media of wood, glass, ceramics, jewelry, textiles, metal and stone, as well as other materials. I will be showing glass. It's my first time of dipping my foot into the big art show market, and I will have much to learn. I look forward to exhibiting my work to a larger audience and sharing my process with them. If you are planning a summer trip to the Bay Area, keep this in mind.Angelita Surmonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10473518589408335246noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4151520760809137169.post-27380210411015675332012-09-18T07:27:00.000-07:002012-09-18T12:31:34.801-07:00Mark Your Calendars! The annual juried Portland Open Studios is just around the corner. I will be participating again this year. The event takes place October 13,14, 20,21. Hours are 10-5 both days. You have the opportunity to see 100 artists at work in their studios. It's a great time to learn about why and how we work, and buy art directly from the makers. For $15 you get 2 tickets, a map, and a fully-illustrated engagement calendar with photos of every artists' work. For $5. you can purchase just the map. The guides and maps are available at New Seasons, and online at Portlandopenstudios.com. I hope to see you soon!
After seeing David Hockney's exhibition, "ABigger Picture," in London at the Royal Academy in April, I became aware of the great possibilities of using an IPad to paint and draw digitally. One large room at the show was filled with joyful large prints from his IPad work. I am 2 weeks into a very large learning curve, but it is serious fun. My intent is to have some of these works available as prints on archival paper.
